Business Growth Strategies for SMEs in South Africa

By Davidson Smangaliso Cele, Managing Director, Davidson and Family Group

Start with what's already working

The most reliable growth strategy for most SMEs isn't a new channel or a big campaign — it's doing more of what's already bringing in business. Before spending on anything new, it's worth understanding exactly where current customers come from, which of those sources are profitable, and which ones simply haven't been given enough attention yet.

Fix the leaks before adding volume

Growth plans often focus entirely on getting more leads in the door, while ignoring how many of those leads are lost along the way — slow response times, unclear pricing, or a follow-up process that depends entirely on one person remembering to do it. Fixing these leaks is usually cheaper and faster than generating more top-of-funnel interest, and it makes every marketing rand spent afterward go further.

Decide what growth actually requires

Growth isn't free — more customers usually means more capacity needed somewhere in the business, whether that's staff, systems or cash flow. A growth strategy that doesn't account for this tends to create a business that's busier but not more profitable. It's worth mapping out, honestly, what an extra 20% of revenue would actually require operationally before chasing it.

Measure what matters, not what's easy to measure

Social media followers and website visits are easy numbers to track, but they aren't the same as revenue. A growth strategy should be built around a small number of business metrics that actually reflect health — new customer acquisition cost, repeat business rate, and average order or contract value are usually more useful starting points than vanity metrics.

Where a growth consultant helps

None of this requires outside help in principle — but an outside perspective is often what surfaces the leaks and blind spots a business owner is too close to see. That's the practical value of business growth consulting: not a new strategy from scratch, but a clearer, more honest read of what's already happening and what to change first.
